Which class fits where you are now
Adults arrive at very different points. The first lesson is spent finding yours, and the class starts there rather than on page one of a set book.
| Where you are | What the lessons work on | Usually first |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot read Arabic yet | The letters and their sounds through the Noorani Qaida, at an adult pace | The alphabet, then joining letters into words |
| You learned as a child and it has faded | Relearning the vowel marks and joined letters until reading is steady again | A reading test, then the gaps it shows |
| You read, but you know it is not correct | Pronunciation from the right place in the mouth, then the rules of recitation | The letters English speakers most often get wrong |
| You read well and want Tajweed | The rules applied while reading, verse by verse, with the teacher listening | Noon and meem rules, then the lengths of the vowels |
| You want to memorise | Short surahs first, with a revision plan that survives a busy month | The surahs you already say in the prayer |
| You are new to Islam | The prayer and al-Fatiha first, then reading | See Quran classes for reverts |
How long each stage takes an adult
These are usual times at two or three lessons a week with a little practice between them. A teacher who can hear you every week is what keeps them realistic, because a mistake caught in week two does not have to be unlearned in month six.
| Stage | What you can do at the end | Usual time for an adult |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Noorani Qaida | Recognise every letter, join letters into words, and say each sound from the right place in the mouth | 3 to 6 months |
| 2. Reading | Read any page of the mushaf, slowly but correctly, without the teacher spelling words out | 6 to 12 months |
| 3. Tajweed | Apply the rules of recitation while reading, without stopping to think about them | 12 to 24 months |
| 4. Memorisation | Hold surahs by heart and keep them, starting with the short surahs of Juz Amma | Ongoing |
| 5. Understanding | Know what the verses mean, so recitation is understood as well as said | Ongoing |
An adult who already reads skips straight to the stage that fits. Someone memorising can start on the short surahs to memorise while still improving their reading.
Fitting lessons around work and family
Most adults who stop do so because the schedule broke, not because the Quran got harder. So the plan starts from your week, not ours.
- Your own time zone. Lessons are set in local time in the US, the UK, Canada or Australia, so a slot before work, at lunch or after the children are asleep is a normal request.
- Two lessons a week is the usual start. Most of our adult students settle there. It survives a busy month better than a heavier plan, and it is enough to keep moving.
- Short is fine. A 30-minute lesson with ten minutes of practice on the days between does more than one long lesson a week.
- Things come up. A lesson can be moved with two hours notice, and the teacher keeps your place in the book.
How a lesson runs
You and the teacher are on a video call with the same page in front of you. You read, the teacher listens, and a mistake is corrected on the word where it happened. That is the part an app or a recorded course cannot do, because you cannot hear your own mistakes in sounds English does not have.
- Send one message. Say what you can read now, if anything, what you want from the Quran, and two or three times that suit you.
- Take the free first lesson. The teacher hears you read, or starts you on the letters, and tells you honestly where you are.
- Keep the same teacher and slot. One named teacher follows your progress from week to week.
A laptop, tablet or phone with a camera and a steady connection is all you need. Lessons are not recorded unless you agree to it first. The rest is on how lessons work.
For sisters
A woman can ask for a female teacher for the Quran, Tajweed or memorisation, at the same price. Sister Nouran, for example, has memorised the whole Quran and holds Ijazah in two narrations. The other women on the faculty are on the female Quran teacher page.
What the classes cost
The hourly rate falls as you book more hours in a month. Every plan is four weeks of lessons, paid in advance, and unused lessons are refundable.
| Schedule | Hours a month | Rate | Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 lessons a week, 30 minutes | 4 | $8.50 an hour | $34 |
| 3 lessons a week, 30 minutes | 6 | $8.00 an hour | $48 |
| 2 lessons a week, 60 minutes | 8 | $7.50 an hour | $60 |
| 3 lessons a week, 60 minutes | 12 | $7.00 an hour | $84 |
Every plan, including the sibling discount for families, is on the pricing page.
Who teaches the classes
You are matched with one teacher, who stays with you. These three teach adults, and the rest of the faculty is on the about page.
Ahmed Abdullah
Quran, Tajweed, Arabic
Ijazah in the Quran in the Hafs narration, with a connected chain. A graduate of Al-Azhar University, teaching Quran for more than ten years.
Mohamed Nayel
Taught in English
Teaches entirely in English, which suits an adult who does not speak Arabic. Four years teaching Quran to English speakers.
Sister Nouran
Hifz, Tajweed, Qaida
Has memorised the whole Quran, with Ijazah in the Hafs and Shu’bah narrations. More than ten years teaching children, teenagers and adults.
Questions to Ask Any Academy Before You Pay
Price and a polished website are easy to compare, so adults compare them. Whether you are still studying in six months depends on other things, and each of them can be asked before you pay. A well-run academy answers in numbers and in writing. Here are the questions, with our answers, so you can compare like for like.
| Ask this | Our answer |
|---|---|
| How much of each lesson do I spend reading aloud while the teacher listens? | Most of it. Lessons are one to one, so every line you read is heard and corrected on the word. A small group is possible if you ask. |
| Who will actually teach me, and do they teach adults now? | One named teacher, agreed before you start, who stays with you. The three named above teach adults. An Ijazah certifies accurate recitation, not skill with adult beginners, so ask about both. |
| What notice do I give to move a lesson? | Two hours. |
| What does a month buy, exactly? | A set number of lessons, listed in the table above, paid in advance. |
| What is refunded? | Unused lessons. Lessons you attended are not. |
| What happens if my teacher becomes unavailable? | You are given a replacement teacher rather than left to find one. |
| Can I try before paying? | Yes. The first lesson is free, with nothing to sign up to, and you leave it knowing where you are and what to start with. |
Be wary of pressure to buy several months before you have met the teacher, a teacher in the advertising who is not the one you are given, no written rule on refunds or moving lessons, and a teacher who lets you finish the page before mentioning the mistake you made in the second line. By then you have practised it eight times.
Free options, and when a teacher is worth paying for
Many mosques run a free adult Quran class, often one evening a week, and it is a good place to start if there is one near you. Free apps and recitation videos help with listening between lessons. What they rarely give you is one teacher hearing you read every week and correcting the exact word you got wrong. If that is what has been missing, it is what these classes are for. Before paying anyone, the checklist in online Quran courses for beginners is worth five minutes. If the cost is what stops you, our list of free ways to learn Quran online says which of them have a teacher hear you read.

Learning as an adult: cost, free options and self-study
How can I learn the Quran as an adult?
Start with the Arabic letters through the Noorani Qaida if you cannot read yet, then read from the mushaf with a teacher listening, and add Tajweed as reading becomes steady. Two short lessons a week with daily practice is the pace most adults keep.
How much do online Quran classes for adults cost?
From $34 a month for two 30-minute lessons a week, which is $8.50 an hour. The rate falls to $7.00 an hour as monthly hours rise, and the first lesson is free.
Are there free online Quran classes for adults?
Some mosques and charities run free adult classes, and many apps are free. Our first lesson is free with no obligation, and later lessons are paid.
Can I learn the Quran by myself?
You can learn a lot alone, especially by listening. Reading aloud correctly needs someone listening, because several Arabic sounds do not exist in English and you cannot hear your own mistakes in them.
How long does it take an adult to read the Quran?
Starting from nothing, most adults read any page correctly in 6 to 12 months after finishing the Noorani Qaida, which itself takes 3 to 6 months. An adult who learned as a child is usually reading steadily again much sooner. Our guide to how long it takes to learn Tajweed shows how those numbers move with the lessons you book each week.
Am I too old to start?
No. Adults of every age learn to read the Quran. An adult usually understands the rules faster than a child, and the teacher sets the pace to your week.
Can I have a female teacher?
Yes. Female teachers are available on request at the same price. Give two or three possible times, since availability depends on the hour.
Tajweed and Hifz lessons for adults
If Tajweed is the main goal, the Tajweed lessons page goes into it in more depth. If memorising is, start with Hifz for beginners. Anyone ready to book can start with a free trial lesson.
