Beyond Quran and Arabic

School Subjects, Languages and Skills

Yes, we teach school subjects, and a fair bit besides. Most families arrive here looking for Quran or Arabic, then ask almost as an afterthought whether we can do anything about the maths. We can.

  • First lesson free
  • One student, one tutor
  • Seven days a week
  • No card details

Lessons are live, on a video call, one student and one tutor. Nothing is recorded for the student to work through alone, and there is no class to fall behind in. A student who missed three weeks in January is not behind here. There is nothing to be behind.

What we cover

  • Every school subjectMaths, physics, chemistry, biology, general science, English, social studies and the rest. If it is on your child’s timetable, ask about it.

  • LanguagesEnglish, German, Italian and Spanish, from the first lesson through to advanced conversation.

  • Digital skillsICDL certification, Microsoft Office, and the fundamentals of Python and JavaScript.

  • CreativeArt workshops, Arabic calligraphy and traditional handcrafts, taught the same way as everything else.

Curricula differ between the US, the UK, Canada and Australia, and we do not pretend to teach one syllabus to everybody. The tutor works from your child’s own textbook, worksheets and past papers. That is slower to set up in the first week and much better after it. If the subject, course or exam you need is not named above, ask anyway.

How a lesson actually goes

  1. The tutor finds out where the student really isThe first lesson is spent on this, which sounds like a wasted lesson and saves weeks. A child who cannot do quadratics is very often a child who is still unsure about fractions, and no amount of quadratic practice will fix that.
  2. Lessons follow what is in front of the studentThis week’s homework. The topic the teacher went through too quickly. The test in three weeks. Not a syllabus of ours.
  3. You can watch any of itParents are welcome to sit in on any lesson, and nothing is recorded unless that is agreed in advance.

The wider picture, including scheduling and what to expect month by month, is on how lessons work. How we teach children online is on the safeguarding page.

Times, lengths and rescheduling

Teaching week
Seven days, across US, UK, Canadian and Australian evenings.
Lesson length
30 to 120 minutes. For most students 30 to 60 is right, and a tired student learns nothing in the last twenty.
Rescheduling
Two hours’ notice, not twenty-four.
Format
One student, one tutor, live video. Never a recording.

What it costs

These lessons are not priced like the Quran and Arabic classes, so please do not read a rate off that page. What you pay depends on four things:

  • Subject
  • Lesson length
  • Age of the student
  • Level they are working at

Forty-five minutes of exam-level chemistry and a half-hour session on times tables are different jobs, and they are not priced the same. So there is no single table to quote from. We give you a figure for your student, and it takes one message to get it.

Discounts are available, and you have to ask for them. Siblings, and booking more hours in a month, are both worth mentioning. We would far rather you asked than assumed the answer was no.

Payment is in advance, and lessons you have paid for and not used are refundable.

Start with a free lesson

The first trial lesson is free, exactly as it is for the Quran and Arabic classes. Nothing to pay, no card details, no obligation to book anything afterwards. The tutor finds out where the student is, answers whatever you want to ask, and says plainly what a sensible starting point would be. If you decide it is not for you, that is the end of it.

Send four short answers and you will get a straight number back: the subject, the lesson length you have in mind, the student’s age, and their year or level. You can also read what happens in a trial lesson first, or use the form.

Questions parents ask

Do you follow our school’s curriculum?

We work from your child’s own materials rather than a curriculum of ours. Bring the textbook, the worksheets and any past papers, and the tutor teaches to those.

Can we do Quran and a school subject with the same academy?

Yes, and plenty of families do. It is one arrangement, one schedule and one conversation rather than two.

My child is not failing, just bored. Is that worth a tutor?

Often more worth it than the other case. A student who is ahead of the class and unoccupied is easy to teach and gets a long way in an hour a week.

Can I ask for a female tutor?

It is your right to ask, we respect that, and we try to arrange one.

What if the tutor is not a good fit?

Say so and we will change them. It is not a complaint and nobody will be offended. Pairing a student with a tutor is partly guesswork on our side, and the first month is when you find out.

More detail on three of them: maths tutoring, physics tutoring and chemistry tutoring. Everything else the academy teaches, including Quran, Tajweed, Arabic and Islamic Studies, is on the course list.
